  • Transaction Deal Bibles

It is standard practice at the end of larger transactions for in-house legal departments to be provided with copies of key documents used for the deal.  The collection of these documents has become known as a "deal bible" or more recently a "transaction volume".  A number of methods are used to store transaction volumes today but each of these has their own problem.  Research found that whilst many firms invest a lot of time and effort into producing branded CDs on the basis these will be used by lawyers at their clients, increasingly the CDs are delivered to IT departments who copy the files to shared network drives or document management systems

In conjunction with the Knowledge Management and IT in-house Group (KMIT), Legal IT Innovators Group (LITIG) members have agreed a common standard for the exchange of electronic transaction deal bibles between law firms and clients.

  • The LITIG E-Billing Standard

Whilst in the US a large number of companies are processing legal invoices electronically using the process of “e-Billing”, this position has not yet made a large impact in the UK, and most Law Firms continue to invoice their clients manually.

One of the barriers to e-Billing in the UK is the lack of a known electronic standard in this area. LITIG members recognise the benefit of e-Billing and have agreed to work together to recommend a LEDES UK standard which could be adopted by software vendors, Law Firms and Clients.

This initiative has been discussed with the LEDES Oversight Committee who now maintain the standard and will be involved in the consultation process.

This area of the web site is devoted to the E-Billing Key Issues Team (KIT). It contains the latest press releases and the e-billing standard.

  • Collaboration Key Issues Team

LITIG are working on two areas to help improve the way law Firms collaborate with their clients and with each other by creating common standards for information exchange.

This KIT is currently working on two standards to improve the way information is exchanged between law firms and their clients. So far two key areas are being discussed by the group:

      1. A common and easy way to share information regarding events and training
      2. A standard "compressed" taxonomy

More details of these standards will be published soon.

  • Electronic File Management
This key issue team explores the area of management of electronic documents and the issues of archiving vs backups vs forensics. It covers topics such as the filing of e-mails together with compliance issues, standards and guidelines in this area that affect law firms and their clients. The paper, is now released in final form having been revised in October 2006 (Version 19) and is for public use. Please direct any comments to peter.owen@lights-on-consulting.com

  • E-Mail Best Practice Guides

LITIG have a number of Key Issue Teams who focus on understanding specific aspects of legal IT and its best use.

They use their own experience, extensive research, input from other members plus consultation with key bodies in the UK legal sector, to provide a summary of their understanding of the current position.

These issues and the Key Issue Teams' findings are then discussed fully with members at one or more of LITIG's Quarterly meetings. These 'Good Practice' guides are the approved output from these sessions and are offered for use and feedback by any interested party.
