The Litig AI Benchmark Initiative: From Discovery to Delivery
The Litig AI Benchmark Initiative has made major strides since our initial discovery workshops — and we’re delighted to share a set of practical resources for the legal industry.
Following months of collaboration and consultation across the legal industry, in October 2025 we launched the AI Transparency Charter, together with a suite of supporting resources designed to promote trust, accountability, and responsible AI adoption across the legal sector.
The Charter — developed with input from over 300 professionals representing law firms, legal technology providers, regulators, and universities — sets out clear, practical commitments for organisations developing or deploying generative AI tools in legal contexts. It is accompanied by:
The Litig AI Product Transparency Statement, a standardised template for AI suppliers to disclose how tools are developed, tested, and maintained.
The Litig AI Use Case Framework, helping firms define and evaluate appropriate AI use cases.
A glossary and supporting reference materials, to improve understanding of AI testing, benchmarking, and regulatory standards.
Together, these resources create a comprehensive foundation for the legal industry to evaluate, adopt, and govern AI responsibly.

A Collaborative Effort
This progress builds on the insights gathered through our initial discovery workshops — one hosted in person at CMS’s London office and another held online — which brought together over 80 organisations to challenge, refine, and evolve our collective thinking.
We’re hugely grateful to everyone who has contributed so far, and to our working group who have transformed those early ideas into practical, shareable outputs for the wider community.
What’s Next
The AI Transparency Charter is just the beginning. Over the coming months, the Litig AI Benchmark Initiative will focus on:
Encouraging AI vendors and law firms to adopt and sign the Charter.
Gathering feedback on the AI Product Transparency Statement and Use Case Framework.
Continuing alignment with international research and initiatives, including the work of ValsAI in the US and others around the world.
We’re proud to see this community-led initiative becoming a model for how the legal profession can approach AI in a safe, ethical, and transparent way.
